Find out what has been happening in school this week.
This week we finished the atlatl and dart project. Time was spent using sanding stones and flint to get the last of the bark off and sharpen up the points. Once they had been tested out, feathers were attached using pine pitch and binding. We couldn’t use them properly today as they needed to dry so next time they will be fired at targets.
The children have worked really hard on these and should be proud of them.
We got together as a whole school this afternoon(apart from those at the Lincolnshire Show) to have a practice of some of the usual sports day races.
When the children weren’t racing, they were sat in the shade of the trees.
Once the races were complete, the children had a game of football rounders which was fun.
We had to move some of the habitat areas that would be in the way for sports day and I’m happy to confirm that slugs, worms, wood lice, flies and a very handsome frog had all made their homes in there. They were very carefully rehomed in a safe place.
This week Y6 began their atlatl project. This was fully independent work, from choosing their own piece of Hazel, to carving the wood. Sawing and knife skills were used, lots of concentration needed but they all did an amazing job.
We will continue this next week.
We did our Friends session under the shade of the trees on the field today. A very relaxed session, doing our happy thoughts, taking some time to appreciate our surrounding, doing a bit of milkshake breathing and having a little barefoot walk.
Lovely chats with a group who have a lot to look forward to.
This week we went back to our forest bathing(Shinrin Yoku) with class 2. In the shade of the trees on the field the children were encouraged to lay down and take the time to relax, notice how the light of the sun was coming through the leaves, to notice the actual leaves and the difference between the underside and the top of the leaf and to listen to the sounds of the trees. We did some mindfulness breathing and then, after a quick bit of advisory chat about where to avoid, the children were able to wander barefoot if they wanted to. Most did and enjoyed the different textures of the grass, the warmth of the soil in mole hills and the feeling of tree brash underfoot.
Lots of positive comments from the children today which was lovely.
Year 6 had a very informative session today discussing online safety. This year group are very clued up on how to keep safe online. The leader was very surprised and impressed that currently none of them are on social media sites. He said this was a first!
Subjects discussed were personal information, responsibility for our own behaviour, respecting others online, cyber bullying, gaming, reporting and blocking, who can help and what to do.
The overriding message was to remember our personal and online selves should not be different and to remember that stranger danger online is as important as in real life.
Year 6 had an incredibly fun and informative workshop on Friday afternoon.
